Professional Obedience and Training at the Olde Towne School for
Dogs
Carlos Mejias and his wife Sandy founded the nationally renowned
Olde Towne School
for Dogs in Alexandria, VA, in 1975. Carlos and Sandy Mejias
met Mark and Barbara Fried over 25 years ago while walking their
dogs Rottweillers and Briards at the time. Both couples have
harbored the dream of an extraordinary dog training facility and
now bring it to fruition at their 27,000 square foot facility in
Springfield, Virginia.
Before opening the Olde Towne School for Dogs, Carlos and Sandy
mentored with one of the most respected dog trainers in the country,
Captain Arthur
Haggerty. Prior to his mentorship, Carlos graduated from the
New York School of Dog Grooming in 1972, from which he has
extensive knowledge of coat management and grooming to the standard
of each breed. Carlos also contributed substantially to the writing
of The Liberated Dog, one of 17 books by Matthew
Margolis, host of the PBS series, WOOF! It's a Dog's Life.

Towne Pet Resort. As an AKC Certified Canine Companion, two year-old
Trey plans to accompany Norma Jane ("Janie") Mejias at
St. Andrews
Presbyterian College in the fall of 2003.
Carlos' and Sandy's knowledge goes far beyond basic pet training
and problem solving. They each have trained several dogs of
different breeds through Utility, an upper-level obedience title.
Moreover, they each successfully won competitive breed championships
for a variety of breeds and helped owners do the same. In response
to the needs of one of their children, the Mejias family developed
a special expertise in training dogs to aid handicapped individuals
in their homes, schools, and workplaces. Their impact on the community
continues, with the conception of the following Animal
Welfare League of Alexandria fundraising events: the Canine
Games, an Olympic event for dogs; Photos with Santa; and the Doggie
Bone Hunt.
Four children and 30,000 trained dogs later, Carlos and Sandy
continue to instruct dogs, their owners, and professional trainers
in the art of canine care and canine communication. To consult with
Carlos or Sandy, please call the Olde Towne School for Dogs at 703.836.7643.
